The Arizona Legislature established the Peace Officer Training Equipment Fund (A.R.S. § 41-1731) and the Peace Officer Training Equipment Advisory Commission (A.R.S. § 41-1732) to provide a dedicated mechanism for evaluating and recommending the use of monies collected through court assessments established by A.R.S. § 12-116.10. The Advisory Commission serves in an advisory capacity and is charged with reviewing funding requests and developing recommendations for the allocation of available fund monies for peace officer training equipment. Pursuant to statute, the Advisory Commission submits its recommendations annually to state policymakers for consideration during the budget development process.

For the Mission Statement:

To support public safety in Arizona by providing a transparent and informed process for evaluating and recommending law enforcement equipment funding needs based on operational experience, agency input, and statewide priorities.

For the Purpose Statement:

To provide informed recommendations regarding law enforcement equipment needs by incorporating the operational experience, expertise, and perspectives of Arizona law enforcement agencies in support of officer readiness and community safety.

Commission Members

Pursuant to A.R.S. § 41-1732, the Peace Officer Training Equipment Advisory Commission (POTEC) is comprised of seven members, including one member of the Arizona Senate, one member of the Arizona House of Representatives, the Director of the Arizona Department of Public Safety (or designee), and representatives appointed by the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police, Arizona Sheriffs' Association, Arizona State Troopers Association, and Arizona Police Association. Legislative members serve as non-voting advisory members. The Advisory Commission annually elects a chairperson and vice chairperson from among its voting members and is responsible for reviewing funding needs and developing recommendations regarding the allocation of monies from the Peace Officer Training Equipment Fund.
